  • FACE OFF

    Thursday’s Face Off: Covering Jackson
Has the media gone overboard covering the death of Michael Jackson? That’s the topic of our ‘face off’ debate. Joining Kitty: Howard Kurtz, media reporter for the Washington Post and host of CNN’s Reliable Sources and Robert Thompson, professor of popular culture at Syracuse University.

  • The Issues that Matter

    Suing Jackson
Michael Jackson survived great adversity throughout his long career including several legal battles. Jackson was cleared of child molestation charges in a high profile case. But he faced several other lawsuits… including some over his music. Ines Ferre has our report.

    States in Crisis
California is about to issue iou’s to pay its bills for the first time in nearly 20 years. About a dozen states have yet to pass their budgets for 2010. As states scramble to find more money there is rising concern over the potential for abuse or wasteful spending. Bill Tucker reports.

    Housing Troubles
Home prices are down across the country. But homeownership is still just a dream for many middle class Americans. In cities like Las Vegas real estate investors willing to pay cash are profiting from the depressed market. As Louise Schiavone reports these investors are beating out first time buyers in need of mortgages.

  • Save E-Verify!

E-Verify will not be considered as part of the Omnibus Bill. Senator Jeff Sessions tried to add the amendment that would have saved E-Verify. E-Verify will remain enforced for the time being, but its future is in jeopardy. The vote was whether to table the amendment. A YES vote is against E-Verify, a NO vote is supporting E-Verify. To see how your Senator voted Click Here.

E-Verify is set to expire. E-Verify is the U.S. Government’s single most effective program against illegal immigration. E-Verify is free to employers and it has an accuracy rate of 99.6%. Business special interests groups want to kill it. Congress stripped language from the stimulus package that would have continued funding for the program. To find out more about E-Verify; a voluntary system used by more than 60,000 employers to check if workers are eligible to work in the U.S. Click here

Contact your representatives and tell them to SAVE E-VERIFY!

Citi’s Credit Card Ripoff
Citibank is sharply raising rates on its credit cards and affiliated credit cards. The rate hike comes just in front of new regulations that would prohibit these kind of rate hikes and just as taxpayers take a 1/3 stake in the company. Bill Tucker will have our report.

Michael Jackson’s State of Mind
Doctors say Jackson has had so many operations on his face that its really shocking to see his pictures from before and after but the real question is what is going on through a persons mind when they do all those operations. Deepak Chopra the other day was saying it shows signs of self mutilation. Ines Ferre will have our report.

Prescription Drug Dangers
Theresa Wheeler knows what is like to watch someone you love spiraling out of control. Her 28-year-old daughter, Jennifer Snow, died in February after taking a lethal combination of drugs. Theresa is a nurse and knew the dangers of abusing prescription drugs. She tried to get her daughter help again and again. Theresa Wheeler has sharp words about the doctors who prescribe these pills. She also has some ideas of solutions – databases to help track when people “doctor shop.” Lisa Sylvester will have our report.

Love and Insanity
A famous diet doctor’s murder the astronaut love triangle, a Los Angeles Mayor’s affair with a news reporter, and now the South Carolina Governor’s fall from grace. They all have in common a bad bout with love. Scientists say the state of being in love is not much different from some forms of insanity: a dizzying loss of judgment, perspective, and proportion. Louise Schiavone will have our report.

Heroes

In this week’s Heroes, we honor Sgt. 1st Class Ronald Strickland. Who has served in the U.S. Army for 15 years, the last 7 were spent with the 82nd Airborne Division. During Strickland’s last tour to Afghanistan his men prevented insurgents from capturing the bodies of his fellow fallen soldiers. A year later President Bush awarded Sgt. 1st Class Strickland the Silver Star for gallantry during Ft. Bragg’s annual “All American Week.”

America belongs to each of us, uncluttered and untainted by advertising images, media bias, and corporate greed. It is an America that is full of choices and one in which we take an active role in our community and in our nation. Unfortunately, I'm no longer sure that this is the America in which we live.
